Tripura asset manager Om Prakash Singh's colleagues are hoping he can work the same 'magic' when he takes over as ONGC's new director technical and field services in April next year as he did when he was head of the Nhava supply base in Mumbai.

Before his appointment as TRIPURA ASSET manager on June 1 (2019) Singh, 55 and a group general manager, introduced new work practices and systems that radically overhauled the Nhava supply base. "Nhava was a junkyard but Singh turned it around in less than a year," says a colleague.

"Now he's moved out it's slowly slipping back to its pathetic state." Singh's Nhava colleagues remember him as a manager who routinely turned up for work at 9am sharp after travelling by road from his residence in Powai, staying in the office until 7pm.

Others argue Singh was 'groomed' for the director technical job by chairman Shashi Shanker because like Shanker, he too is a 'driller'. "Singh was brought in to head (ONGC's) Nhava (shore supply base on the outskirts of Mumbai) then transferred to Agartala as asset manager so he could lead an asset and is well-prepared for the (director technical) interview," we hear.

Singh's supporters however believe he is the best person for the job. "Yes, he's Shanker's favourite," one admits.

"But that's because he is good at his job; he's diligent, hardworking and a team leader."
