Age before beauty in ONGC directors selection

Vol 20, PW 22 (27 Jul 17) People & Policy

Age before beauty seems to be the new mantra at the PESB which is preparing to select only the most senior candidates to replace three outgoing ONGC directors.

AK Srinivasan, director finance retires on October 31; TK Sengupta, director offshore, retires on December 31 and VP Mahawar, director onshore retires on February 28, 2018. An advert to replace Srinivasan appeared on July 3 followed by two separate adverts the next day (July 4) to replace Sengupta and Mahawar.

ONGC sources expect much interest in these posts but stress the PESB will base its selection strictly on the rank and seniority of each candidate to prevent long-serving officers getting demoralised. "This principle has been followed for about a year in all PESB selections," we learn.

For director finance the highest ranked candidate is likely to be (Ms) Harjeet Kaur Joshi, director finance at state-owned Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) on loan from ONGC. Next in line is OVL director finance Vivekanand.

They ranked second and third respectively during the ONGC chairman interviews on June 19 to replace DK Sarraf. Both are equally competent but Joshi has a clear advantage - on ONGC's Board there is no full-time woman director.

For director offshore ONGC is likely to recommend eight names by the September 12 deadline: executive directors Sanjay Moitra, Rajesh Kakkar, Arvind Morbale, TK Banerjee, RK Gupta; and group general managers DD Sathe, Narendra Asija, and SK Tamilselvan.
