GSPC boss JN Singh hospitalised

Vol 20, PW 10 (09 Feb 17) News in Brief

Affable and friendly GSPC managing director JN Singh has been forced to take a month off work after undergoing angiography and angioplasty to remove blockages and complications in his coronary arteries.

Singh, 58, who doubles up as Gujarat chief secretary, the state's most powerful bureaucrat, was admitted to the UN Mehta Heart Hospital in Ahmedabad's civil hospital campus on January 28. When contacted, a hospital source tells us Singh has been advised complete bed rest and would be away from office at least until February-end.

In Gandhinagar, sources tell us joint GSPC managing director T. Natarajan will look after GSPC and additional chief secretary (industry) PK Taneja will be acting chief secretary until Singh returns.

"In the last few months Singh has shouldered a very heavy workload," says a friend and colleague. "Not only was he overall in charge of Vibrant Gujarat he also saw through the Deen Dayal deal with ONGC.

Organising Vibrant Gujarat summits is stressful and time consuming and as chief secretary the buck stops with him."
