Gujarat State Petronet is increasing its 2348-km Gujarat gas grid by 366-km by targeting a region in north Gujarat where factories are planned by US car manufacturer Ford and Japanese auto giants Suzuki and Honda.

A company source confirms it is focusing on laying the 57-km Mandal to Bechraji pipeline stretch which will connect car manufacturing hub Mandal Bechraji Special Investment Region (SIR) to the state gas grid. Ford, Suzuki and Honda are planning to invest more than Rs25,000cr ($3.83bn) in the area over the next few years.

Gujarat Petronet is also setting up two gas compressors at Gana village, each with a 14m cm/d capacity. "So far we've covered 25 of Gujarat's 33 districts," we hear.

"Now we're also focusing on peripheral districts in eastern and western Gujarat." BSE-listed Gujarat Petronet has steadily seen its transmission figures rise from 21.08m cm/d in 2013-14 to 23m cm/d in 2014-15 to 24.18m cm/d over April-June this year when it transmitted 2201.19m cubic metres in total.
