Cairn looking for six rigs at Rajasthan

Vol 18, PW 25 (13 Aug 15) News in Brief

After abruptly cancelling the contracts of seven rigs in January, Cairn is on a hiring spree at its producing RJ-ON-90/1 block to take advantage of low prices.

Cairn is set to invite bids from pre-qualified drillers like John Energy, Quippo and Weatherford to hire six rigs to "maintain" production at around 172,000 b/d. "Lots of rigs are idle and this is the best time to negotiate long-term contracts," says a driller.

"Cairn knows it will need rigs for development and workover jobs." On location Cairn has four rigs drilling at RJ-ON-09/1. GTC Oilfield Services' rig GTC 100 is drilling well Guda 2; John Energy's rig John-24 is carrying out development drilling at well pad 1 at the Mangala oilfield; and two Xtreme Drilling rigs are also at Mangala under the 90 firm, six optional well integrated contract with service provider Halliburton.

"Xtreme has drilled 67 of 90 firm wells and the contract will end soon," we hear. "John 24's contract ends in November.

Xtreme Drilling is likely to offer its rigs for rehire."
