Gujarat confused over GSPC chairman appointment

Vol 8, PW 24 (09 Mar 05) News in Brief

Confusion reigns in Gujarat over who will replace CK Koshy as chairman of Gujarat State Petroleum.

Koshy retired on 28th February but his position remains vacant as bureaucrats and politicians argue over who will replace him. We hear Gujarat state officials want a bureaucrat from the IAS to replace Koshy as chairman but that ruling BJP politicians are lobbying for a minister in the state cabinet of chief minister Narendra Modi to take charge.

The best way would have been to appoint energy secretary Balwant Singh as GPSC chairman, says one source. Instead he has only been given temporary charge (of GSPC).

It now seems the post will lie vacant till chief minister Modi makes up his mind whether to appoint a bureaucrat or a politician. Koshy took over as chairman of GSPC in May 2003 and was instrumental in the companys growth as an upstream player and licence distributor for CGD networks.
