Borthakur favourite

ONGC executive director PK Borthakur is tipped as the frontrunner to step into the ONGC director offshore post, vacated when Sudhir Vasudeva became company chairman on October 3.

Borthakur has been in charge of ONGC’s largest gasfield, Bassein, for nearly four years and is also responsible for overseeing the company’s satellite fields. He has worked in the offshore sector since 1998.

Borthakur is likely to face a strong challenge from ONGC executive director PK Ghosh, who heads its marketing department. “Ghosh stays away from the limelight,” comments an ONGC source.

“But he has plenty of experience.” Another internal candidate likely to apply is Ashok Varma, CEO of ONGC Videsh subsidiary Imperial Energy.

But Varma’s chances are weaker as he has not worked on many offshore projects recently. For now, ONGC chairman Vasudeva continues to hold the additional role of director offshore, but the PESB is expected to begin hunting for his replacement soon.
