Kumar replaces Chandra

Vol 15, PW 4 (25 Aug 11) News in Brief

Oil ministry joint secretary international co-operation Vivek Kumar took on the additional role of joint secretary gas and marketing on August 15.

But this is only a temporary measure until the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) formally selects a replacement for Apurva Chandra, who was moved to the ministry of human resource development on August 3. Kumar, 45, is described by colleagues as a “balanced person.

” He joined the IAS in 1990 from West Bengal and came to the ministry in August 2007. In his new role, Kumar will be responsible for overseeing LPG distribution, domestic gas allocations, gas pipeline networks, and licenses for petrol and diesel stations.

But the new role has also forced him to cancel an official visit to Azerbaijan, which was scheduled for September 2. “Kumar cannot travel until he responds to a large number of pending parliamentary questions on the gas and marketing division,” explains a ministry source.
