Reliance uses new CBM technology for first time

Vol 11, PW 7 (09 Aug 07) Exploration & Production

Reliance is known to use the best technology that money can buy across all its businesses.

This is no different for its growing CBM business. PETROWATCH learns Reliance has begun experimenting with the little-used but highly effective â€کCavity Completion’ technology to increase CBM production rates at its 500-sq km Sohagpur West exploration block in Madhya Pradesh.

Supplied by Mitchell Drilling of Australia, the results have been spectacular. Last month (July) Reliance drilled five wells to a depth of 600 metres each to begin trial runs for the technology, which increases the permeability of coal seams thereby improving the flow of CBM from the well.

“One well is being completed using this technology,â€‌ we hear. “Reliance let the well flow for a few hours during completion and to its surprise it flowed 20,000 cm/d.

â€‌ This figure is yet to be independently corroborated but Reliance is understandably upbeat. “It takes about two to three weeks time to complete one well using â€کCavity Completion’ technology,â€‌ adds a source.

“Reliance should be able to complete the other four wells by the middle of September.â€‌ CBM experts tell us “with increased permeability, gas from coal seams finds more pathways to reach the well bore which results in increased production at up to 20% less cost.

â€‌ Reliance believes wells using â€کCavity Completion’ technology can produce four to five times more CBM then conventional wells. “World over there are only a few examples where â€کCavity Completion’ technology is used,â€‌ we hear.

“It is successful only in some parts of the San Juan Basin in the US. In Australia it is successfully used in the Fair View Basin area.

â€‌ After Sohagpur West, Reliance hopes to use â€کCavity Completion’ technology at its 495-sq km Sohagpur East block. In Delhi the DGH marvels at Reliance’s progress.

“The results after using â€کCavity Completion’ technology are excellent,â€‌ we hear. “Reliance is doing a great job at both blocks.
