DGH ready to spend $2m on creation of upstream database

Vol 7, PW 1 (26 Mar 03) News in Brief

Ministry officials have approved a plan by the DGH to set up its long-awaited National Exploration and Production Database and Archive.

"Approval has come in for the first phase of the Database programme," we learn. "A sum of Rs10cr ($2m) has been sanctioned.

Work has already begun. Initial plans are to archive data only for unlicensed areas and also for areas relinquished by ONGC, Oil India, and private companies.

We understand ONGC is willing to share uninterpreted data with the DGH but is reluctant to share proprietary interpreted data. Another problem envisaged is how to reconcile the different formatting used by ONGC, Oil India and private companies.

Defence ministry security concerns are also a problem.
