New BPCL director

Vol 14, PW 23 (19 May 11) News in Brief

BK Datta is set to become the next BPCL director refineries, a post lying vacant since RK Singh was elevated to the role of company chairman in December 2010.

PETROWATCH learns Datta, who is executive director at BPCL’s Mumbai Refinery, was ranked first after PESB interviews on May 11, 2011. Datta is described by his colleagues as “straightforward and knowledgeable” and was previously a member of the oil ministry’s ‘MB Lal’ committee to investigate the devastating October 2009 fire at IOC’s Jaipur fuel depot.

It might take nearly three months before a formal announcement of Datta’s appointment is made, says an oil ministry source, but there should be no obstacles to him getting all the necessary clearances. Among the other candidates who were shortlisted for the interview were Bharat Oman Refineries managing director UN Joshi; BPCL executive director international trade RK Mehra; and Bharat PetroResources managing director D.
