Torrent clearance

Vol 14, PW 11 (18 Nov 10) News in Brief

Ambitious Torrent Power is moving another step closer towards its goal of becoming India’s biggest gas-based electricity generation company.

In the last week of October, Torrent secured the all-important clearance from the Ministry of Environment & Forests in Delhi for the second of three 400-MW components of a proposed 1200-MW new power plant to be set up in a tax-friendly Special Economic Zone at Dahej, promoted by ONGC with Gujarat state authorities. Siemens has already begun work on the first 400-MW unit, and approval for the third is expected soon.

Torrent will need 4.48m cm/d for its new power plant, most likely sourced from Petronet-LNG’s adjacent import terminal at Dahej. Torrent is also adding a fourth 382.4-MW unit to its existing 1147.50-MW Sugen gas based station near Surat, for which it will need an additional 1.69m cm/d.

In Phase-II and III of the Sugen expansion, Torrent hopes to add another 3000-MW, bringing total capacity up to 4500-MW.
