AFCONS begins work at Kochi

Vol 13, PW 7 (10 Sep 09) News in Brief

Indian EPC contractor AFCONS has begun work to set up LNG tanker berthing facilities at Petronet-LNG’s 2.5m t/y LNG terminal under construction at Kochi in Kerala.

“AFCONS has started geo-technical and soil investigation studies at the site,â€‌ says an industry source. AFCONS won the bid to set up â€کmarine facilities’ at Kochi on June 30 with a quote of “less than $60mâ€‌ against competition from Punj Lloyd and ITD Cementation.

Work has begun early because AFCONS had already mobilised on site as a sub-contractor for IHI of Japan, which is setting up two LNG storage tanks there, and which has completed the base slab of the first tank: T-101. This report also learns that on August 26, Petronet-LNG held a four-day â€کkick-off’ meeting with CTCI of Taiwan, which won a contract to set up regassification facilities at Kochi on June 25.

“This meeting was held to agree procedures to be followed by CTCI,â€‌ says a source. CTCI will soon mobilise equipment and begin construction.
