Oil minister Murli Deora was at his charismatic best during a function to mark refiner Indian Oil’s golden jubilee celebrations in Delhi on June 30.

Turning to President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, India’s first woman head of state, Deora told the audience: “I told madam she is wearing a beautiful â€کsari’ (a traditional Indian drape). She replied she chose to wear a golden â€کsari’ because she was attending the golden jubilee ceremony!â€‌ Bemused Patil then listened to Deora continue with a routine speech praising the benefits of Reliance and D6, highlighting the achievement of “Cairn Engineering Ltdâ€‌ in discovering oil in Rajasthan, and promising to retain the crippling subsidy on kerosene, the â€کpoor man’s fuel,’ which at Rs9/litre is cheaper than a bottle of mineral drinking water! By 2015, said Deora, the government would extend the reach of LPG, another fuel that benefits from an unnecessary government subsidy, and that people could order it by SMS on their cell phones.
