Shell Pipavav LPG storage almost ready

Vol 12, PW 9 (18 Sep 08) News in Brief

Shell can soon resume operations at its 2700-tonne LPG storage facility at Pipavav port in Gujarat.

PETROWATCH learns the facility will resume operations in October after a gap of nearly 11 months needed to augment gas handling systems. “We think the expanded jetty at Pipavav port will be ready next month,â€‌ Shell tells PETROWATCH.

“Our storage facility there was not used during work to expand the jetty.â€‌ During the disruption to its activity Shell was using storage facilities owned by Dutch-based SHV Holdings at Porbandar port in Gujarat and by Aegis Logistics at Mumbai, bringing in LPG shipments of 2500 tonnes at a time.

Shell’s LPG ambitions in India are limited, and the company has no immediate plans to expand storage capability and imports or find new markets outside Gujarat and Maharashtra. “We will look at new markets only if there is a level playing field,â€‌ adds Shell.

“The LPG industry can only grow after the government stops subsidies.â€‌
