Deora wants Gupta as new JS refineries

Vol 12, PW 1 (29 May 08) News in Brief

LN Gupta, resident commissioner in Delhi for Orissa, will be the next joint secretary refineries after Prabh Das stepped down on March 6 to become CEO of the proposed Bhatinda refinery promoted by Lakshmi Mittal and HPCL.

Oil minister Murli Deora prefers Gupta to Apurva Chandra, resident commissioner in Delhi for Maharashtra, and former secretary to earlier BJP oil minister Ram Naik. Gupta’s name is being sent to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet for approval.

PETROWATCH learns the Department of Personnel and Training originally submitted Gupta’s name to the oil ministry 10 days ago as a replacement for outgoing joint secretary exploration AK Jain whose five-year stint in Delhi ends on June 30. Deora, however, wants Gupta as new JS refineries.

“It makes no sense to replace Jain when the JS refineries post is vacant since March,â€‌ we hear. “Anyway, Jain is likely to get an extension to see the NELP-VII process through to completion.
