ONGC Videsh is set to begin an appraisal programme of the Najwat Najem offshore block in Qatar, more than two years after it signed the contract.

OVL has hired Aban VII, an independent leg slot type jack-up rig from Aban Offshore, to drill two appraisal wells. “Aban VII has reached Sharjah,â€‌ confirm OVL.

“She will reach her drilling location by next week (around 17th June).â€‌ PETROWATCH learns the rig is expected to spud her first well by the end of this month (June).

ONGC Videsh expects that it will take four to five months to drill the two appraisal wells at Najwat Najem, a 120-sq km offshore structure located in the Arabian Gulf 100-km northeast of the capital Doha. OVL won the Najwat Najem block against competition from up to 12 other companies and signed an Appraisal, Development and Production Sharing Agreement with Qatar Petroleum on 2nd March 2005.

Shortly after OVL managing director RS Butola said the field holds reserves of up to 300m barrels.
