Vol 3, PW 9 (26 May 99) News in Brief

The Gujarat High Court has thrown out two Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petitions against a pipeline belonging to Reliance Petroleum from the site of its Single Buoy Mooring (SBM) off the coast of Gujarat to the site of its refinery in Jamnagar.

The petitions accused Reliance of destroying the local environment, and challenged the permission given to the company by the local Chief Wild Life Warden. Judges rejected the argument, saying the pipeline crossed barren land with no significant biota, live corals or mangrove.

The court did, however, instruct Reliance to arrange for an inspection by Indias National Institute of Oceanography to ensure that local ecology was protected.
