Vol 3, PW 13 (24 Jul 99) News in Brief

Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee was in Assam Friday (9 July) to formally commission the 3m tonnes a year (t/y) Numaligarh Refinery in the Golghat district of Upper Assam.

Never one to miss the historical significance of an occasion, Vajpayee said: "This is a dream come true and the fulfilment of a promise made during the signing of the Assam Accord in 1985". The Indian government has made clear its intention to export much of Numaligarhs production to neighbouring Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Demand for petro-products in north-east India is enough to absorb only 25% of production from Numaligarh. The refinery will produce kerosene, LPG, high speed diesel, petrol and naphtha.
