Piped gas for Delhi by July 2000

Vol 3, PW 22 (24 Nov 99) News in Brief

Sounds too good to be true Perhaps, but thats a target set by Rajeev Sharma, Managing Director of Indraprashta Gas, a company set up to oversee the supply of piped gas to Delhis 2m households.

A total of 7,500 km of pipes are needed to complete the project, which has been divided into three phases. Sharma said Phase 1 involves the laying of 250km of pipes and should be ready by March 2000.

Contractors are shortly expected to begin work laying the pipes, most of which will pass under existing roads to avoid digging up the capital. Sharma adds that Delhi needs much more than the 330,000 cubic metres a day (cm/d) of gas it receives now, but that his first priority is to build the infrastructure.
