Extremist violence in the gas-rich state of Tripura over the past 10 days has left at least 26 people dead.

On Sunday (14th November), about 20 armed rebels from the outlawed All-Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) raided a market in Panchabatin, a village bordering Bangladesh, firing gunshots as shoppers fled. State officials said nine people died during the attack and nine others died later in hospital.

On Monday (22nd November) militants of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) ambushed a police convoy at Banduar in south Tripura, killing eight policemen and injuring five. The extremists lobbed grenades and opened fire from a hill- top.

The police convoy was on its way to Maharani area to launch an anti-insurgency operation. (
