Vol 4, PW 5 (12 Apr 00) News in Brief

Future prospects for the consumption of LPG in India have been given a boost following a government decision to formally allow its utilisation as fuel for motor vehicles.

On 5th April, India's cabinet agreed to propose an amendment to the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, allowing the use of LPG as a fuel in cars and other vehicles. Pramod Mahajan, a government minister, said the cabinet made the decision to promote LPG as a motor fuel because of its "eco-friendly" qualities.

Mahajan said people who want to convert their petrol-driven cars into LPG-driven cars would not need prior government permission.
