Vol 4, PW 1 (16 Feb 00) News in Brief

Essar Projects, part of the Mumbai-based Essar Group, has won a Rs18cr ($4.2m) contract from the Qatar General Petroleum Corporation.

The contract, valued at Rs18cr ($4.2m), is to lay a gas and air pipeline to carry excess gas from QGPCs North Fields to its Arab-D Gas reservoir, using seamless pipes, which it plans to source from Europe or Japan. Essar won the contract against 25 rival bids from Europe, Korea, China, Egypt, UAE, and Saudi Arabia.

Essar Projects has traditionally restricted its business to India, where it has laid pipelines from the Bombay High on behalf of ONGC, GAIL and Hindustan Petroleum. This is the companys first overseas contract.

Its sister company Essar Oil employs ten drilling rigs in the Middle East. Essar Projects director B Suryakumar said the company plans to target the Middle East for more business.
