Mystery over postponement of BSES public hearing

Vol 5, PW 5 (25 Apr 01) News in Brief

For some inexplicable reason, the public hearing under the Environmental Protection Act for the Bombay Suburban Electricity Supply's proposed gas-fired 495-MW power station at Safale, near Bombay, has been postponed.

It was scheduled for April 20th, but has been pushed back to April 30th. "We have no idea why it was postponed, we only know the whole process has become very frustrating," a senior BSES official tells this report.

"Companies like ours and the Tatas who are willing to invest from their own balance sheets are being given this kind of shabby treatment." A public hearing is a crucial requirement for official clearance of the project.
