Another pointless visit to the Dabhol power plant

Vol 9, PW 21 (09 Feb 06) News in Brief

Theres still no sign of work to revive the idle Enron-promoted Dabhol project.

Instead, bureaucrats and politicians seem more interested in visiting the incomplete 2184-MW power station and 2.5m t/y LNG terminal on junkets paid at the taxpayers expense. The latest visit was on 27th January by a team led by Prithivraj Chauhan, minister of state in the office of PM Manmohan Singh.

Protocol demanded that senior officials accompany him so secretary power RV Shahi, joint secretary power AK Kutty, NTPC chairman CP Jain, Ratnagiri Gas and Power chairman Chandan Roy, Maharashtra states energy secretary Bhagwan Sahai, Jayant Kawle chairman of Maharashtra State Electricity Board and others all went for the ride. Why the visit The minister wanted to see the site, we are told.

Chauhan holds the power ministry until a replacement is found for former power minister PM Sayeed who unexpectedly died on 19th December.
