Indo-Pak tensions stall work at BB-OS/5

Vol 6, PW 10 (17 Jul 02) News in Brief

An unintended casualty of border tension between India and Pakistan has been work at the Saurashtra offshore block BB-OS/5.

Operator Petrom of Romania has shot 1,600 km 2D as part of its Phase-I work programme, but it's still waiting for mandatory defence ministry clearance to export data to Romania for processing and interpretation. We learn the survey was completed end-April and permission sought mid-May by which time India and Pakistan had massed troops on the border and talk of war peaked.

Now that tensions have eased permission should not be long in coming. "Once we send the data, we will be able to complete special processing and interpretation in three months time." After this Petrom and its partner Essar Oil decide whether or not to proceed with Phase-II.

One well drilled on this block during Phase-I turned out to be a dry hole.
