Liaison officers from PSU oil companies are swarming all over Shastri Bhawan these days to ensure their bosses are allowed to attend the World Petroleum Congress in Rio de Janeiro from 1st to 5th September as part of the government delegation.

The powerful Cabinet Secretariat must clear such visits. Shastri Bhawan has submitted a list of nine for Rio, among them oil minister Ram Naik and his private secretary Apurva Chandra, secretary B.

K Chaturvedi and the chiefs of ONGC, Oil India, GAIL, Bharat and Hindustan Petroleum. Petronet-LNG wants to send technical director Sham Sunder in place of MD Suresh Mathur.

"Naik's trip has been cleared by the PM. He is definitely going." Ever hopeful, the other nominees are understood to be packing their bags and getting vaccinated for yellow fever!
