Vol 6, PW 16 (09 Oct 02) News in Brief

Threats of an all-out strike by ONGC's Association of Scientific and Technical Officers has been averted with the signing of a MoU with management on 30th September.

At stake were 17 demands submitted to management, relating to outstanding promotions pending for the past three years. ONGC set up a committee comprising director onshore R.

C Gourh, director personnel Jauhari Lal and director finance R.S Sharma to negotiate with ASTO.

On 23rd September talks broke down and ASTO went on a "tools down" strike on 26th and 27th September ahead of a two-day stoppage of work planned for 9th and 10th October. We understand ONGC's management and Shastri Bhawan were shaken by ASTO's resolve.

Negotiationsresumed on 29th September and a MoU was signed the next day, with most of ASTO's demands met. ONGC's 22,000 officers are all members of ASTO.
