Elections in Gujarat will delay policy decisions

Vol 6, PW 19 (20 Nov 02) News in Brief

Companies with important proposals pending in Gujarat should be patient.

It's election time and you will have to wait at least three weeks before any policy decisions are taken. On 28th October the Election Commission announced that Gujarat elections would take place on 12th December.

From the day the election date is announced until elections are over the Election Commission's Code of Conduct bars any major policy decisions that could be construed as an attempt to influence voters. In theory, proposals already under review will not be affected but in reality, they will be.

Mostofficials want to "watch and wait" till elections are over. One bureaucrat tells us: "We will all use risk aversion technology till the elections are over." Gujarat's ruling BJP government is facing a tough challenge from the opposition Congress party.
