GAIL plans CBM for consumers in Calcutta

Vol 6, PW 1 (13 Mar 02) News in Brief

Consumers in Calcutta can soon look forward to receiving coal bed methane from GAIL, which signed a MoU for city gas distribution on 1st March with the West Bengal government.

GAIL will start supplying coal bed methane to city consumers from Great Eastern Energy Corporation's Raniganj CBM block. The MoU envisages an 85-km pipeline from Raniganj to Calcutta where Great Eastern already has a 900 km gas pipeline network in place supplying 8,000 consumers.

These pipes are presently used to supply coal gas, but GAIL plans to use them for CBM as well. "We will supply either CBM or natural gas, whichever is available,"a source tells us.
