Deora doesnآ’t like travelling overseas

Vol 10, PW 2 (18 May 06) News in Brief

Oil minister Murli Deora has made it clear to officers in his ministry that he is not keen on overseas travel.

This contrasts sharply with his predecessor Mani Shankar Aiyars penchant for globetrotting, which earned him the title of Indias most travelled oil minister. Deora has told his officers that long aeroplane flights do not suit his temperament or his health and that he would like to remain in India as far as possible.

What about the inevitable routine travel Deora is unwilling to undertake even this kind of travel and wants junior oil minister and fluent Hindi-speaker Dinsha Patel to do it all. This is unlike most Indian ministers who are always ready to travel overseas on foreign junkets at public expense.

Deoras aversion to foreign travel is also because politics is not his main occupation. He is also a businessman and, probably prefers being in India to better control hisbusiness interests.
