Coming soon: India gas vision

Vol 27, PW 20 (03 Oct 24) News in Brief

Later this month (October 2024), a panel headed by former PNGRB chairman DK Sarraf will finalise a domestic gas sector vision document for 2040.

A well-placed source says the panel was scheduled to meet in Delhi in early October 2024 to gather views from fertiliser, power and steel sector representatives. After this final meeting with stakeholders, the panel will discuss what they learned.

"Simultaneously, report writing will begin," says a source. "The panel aims to complete the report by the end of October (2024) and submit it to the PNGRB."

So far, the Sarraf panel has held nine meetings with gas sector stakeholders such as CGD companies, transporters, and automobile companies, including Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors. Almost all the panel meetings have taken place in Delhi except for the second meeting, which took place earlier this year (2024) in Ahmedabad with S&P Global, Adani-Total Gas, Adani-Total LNG, Torrent Power, GSPC, GSPC Mundra, and Gujarat Gas.

According to a source, the PNGRB set up this six-member panel on May 3 (2024) to prepare a report based on "inputs from stakeholders whose actions would impact gas demand and supply in the medium term (2040) and gas infrastructure in India." It first met on May 27 (2024) in Delhi.

Also on the panel are Gurdeep Singh, chairman of state-owned power producer NTPC; Sandeep Gupta, chairman of GAIL; Manoj Jain, MD of Torrent Gas (and former CMD of GAIL); AK Balyan, chairman and director at Carmine Energy and former MD of Petronet-LNG; and Suresh Manglani, CEO of Adani-Total Gas. PNGRB joint advisor Pankaj Bhutani is the panel's convenor.
