DGH wants Cairn and Reliance for hydrate research

Vol 7, PW 3 (23 Apr 03) News in Brief

Ministry officials have shelved a DGH proposal to involve private companies in India's gas hydrate programme.

We learn the DGH wants to involve companies like Cairn Energy and Reliance to take advantage of the seismic they have shot in the Krishna Godavari basin. According to the DGH, both companies discovered "gas hydrate signatures" during deepwater drilling.

However, Shastri Bhawan feels the gas hydrate programme is still a research and development programme and that it is too early to involve private companies. India's domestic gas hydrates programme involves shooting high-resolution deepwater seismic data on the east and west coast.

ONGC, GAIL and Oil India are part of the programme, which is directly supervised by Shastri Bhawan.
