Cairn Energy drills a dry hole at CB-OS/2

Vol 7, PW 2 (09 Apr 03) News in Brief

Cairn Energy has drilled a dry hole at exploration 'Prospect K' on its offshore Gujarat Block CB-OS/2 in which sit the Lakshmi and Gauri gasfields.

In a 3rd April statement Cairn said it spudded the "CB-K-1 exploration well on the western margin" of the block on 22nd March. "The well was drilled to a total depth of 1,255 metres and encountered thick, high quality reservoir sands with residual oil saturations.

The sands were what we were looking for. But the oil that had been trapped in the sands had migrated leaving residue." Cairn has plugged and abandoned the well and is moving rig Ensco-54 from 'Prospect K' to the CB-A-6 Lakshmi oil appraisal well.

Cairn continues exploration on the "more prospective eastern margin" with shallow water seismic underway.
