Reliance plans exploration well offshore Saurashtra

Vol 7, PW 1 (26 Mar 03) News in Brief

Reliance plans to spend $14.2m on ongoing Phase-II exploration at its offshore Gujarat exploration block SR-OS-94/1.

Of this amount $10.6m is earmarked for one exploratory well and the balance on geological and geophysical studies. SR-OS-94/1 is a 9,150-sq km block off the Saurashtra coast.

Awarded during the 7th bidding round, Reliance signed a PSC in April 2000. During 'Phase-I' Reliance was supposed to reprocess 3,000-km existing 2D and acquire, process and interpret 100-sq km 3D.

But preliminary interpretation revealed a "new, hitherto untested, geological play covering an area of more than 3,000-sq km." The DGH has approved a Reliance request to modify the 'Phase-I' work programme and shoot 2,500-km 2D in place of 100-sq km 3D.
