BPCL considers broadcasting as an option

Bharat Petroleum is clearly a company with a difference.

Just as the oil ministry is screaming at oil companies to stick to their core competence, BPCL has come up with an innovative idea of moving into broadcasting. PETROWATCH learns this is an option BPCL is looking at to monetise extra satellite bandwidth that remains unused for at least 10 hours on any given day.

Our entire bandwidth of ku band 32 mHz is unused at night because we work nine to five, a BPCL source tells this report. Last year the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting leased an INSAT 3A satellite linked transponder to BPCL for its internal communication.

We may offer direct to home services or lease out our bandwidth to television channels, the source said. BPCL is now looking for a consultant who could advise it.

We are definitely not moving away from our core competence, he adds. This is just another way of making money.
