Cairn shortlists 3 for Palar rig

Vol 20, PW 4 (03 Nov 16) News in Brief

Cairn India has shortlisted Aban Offshore, Greatship and Shelf as the main contenders in its tender to hire a jack-up to drill three exploration wells at the offshore PR-OSN-2004/1 block.

Cairn is targetting selection of a rig provider and supplier to hire the allied services this month (November). Most to gain will be Aban, which has several rigs lying idle and can spring a surprise, according to a driller.

"Shelf Drilling has offered a rig to Cairn which is outside India," we hear. "Shelf also has four rigs in India coming off ONGC contracts by mid-2017." Dynamic Drilling, Transocean and Saipem also submitted offers in March 2016.

A Cairn source adds it wants the rig mobilised by April 2017 "or a little earlier" to drill three wells in water depths of less than 100 metres to a shallow depth of around 2000 metres TD before the monsoon season hits the east coast Palar region in June 2017. Drillers believe Shelf will negotiate hard to outbid Greatship and Aban.

Cairn believes PR-OSN-2004/1 holds around 30m barrels of recoverable oil.
