At last Dabhol breakwater beckons

Vol 19, PW 18 (19 May 16) News in Brief

Maybe these bidders are fans of the movie, 'The Neverending Story.' Whatever the reason, six companies have shown interest in the fourth tender likely to be issued soon by GAIL and NTPC joint venture Ratnagiri Gas to construct a much-delayed breakwater at the 5m t/y Dabhol LNG terminal.

At the May 6 pre-tender meeting were Korean companies Samsung and Hyundai, Hyderabad-based Dharti Dredging & Infrastructure, AFCONS, Essar and an unnamed foreign player. "We have prepared the tender documents and they are ready," confirms a senior GAIL source.

"Expect to see the tender on the website soon." Whoever wins will be asked to complete the 1.9-km breakwater unfinished by disgraced original Dabhol promoter Enron. Ratnagiri Gas's last tender in 2014 was scrapped after lowest bidder Essar quoted Rs600cr ($90m) but walked away following award delays.

Before its implosion, Enron had completed around 400 metres of the breakwater by 2001.
