Reliance ethylene cracker ready by 2020

Vol 19, PW 17 (05 May 16) News in Brief

Reliance is now aiming to commission the world's largest $5bn ethylene cracker at its Jamnagar refinery and petrochemicals complex by end-2019 or early 2020.

This project was originally scheduled for commissioning by July 2016. Larsen & Toubro Hydrocarbon Engineering Vadodara is also expected to complete a Rs300cr ($45.1m) ethylene cryogenic storage tank by July 2018, under an EPC contract awarded in 2014.

But this 45,260 cubic metre tank will only be used after the ethylene cracker is completed and commissioned under the $11bn JERP-3 (Jamnagar Export Refinery Project-3) expansion. "Once we complete our work, we will hand over the tank to Reliance and return to Vadodara," says an L&T source.

At present L&T Construction is doing the civil works on the thermally insulated double integrity tank with a 'full containment system' which is being built in line with API-620 11th edition standards. This tank is designed to store ethylene at -110 degrees centigrade.

Technip is setting up the ethylene cracker under an EPC contract awarded on July 4, 2012.
