Ron Somers to head US-India business council

Former Unocal India chief Ron Somers has been appointed President of the US-India Business Council.

A council statement said Somers would take charge on 1st December and be based in Washington. Somers has spent 11 years in India, first with power company Cogentrix and then with Unocal.

A fluent Hindi speaker, Somers is widely regarded as a friend of India. We cant think of no better candidate, said Rajat Kumar Gupta, Chairman of the US-India Business Council and McKinsey partner.

We look forward to his leadership. The US-India Business Council is a membership organisation of more than 100 US companies with interests in India.

Set up in 1975, it acts as the voice of US industry, promoting policy change to deepen and strengthen bilateral and commercial ties between India and the US. Somers is director on the board of Hindustan Oil Exploration in his individual capacity.
