A chemical engineer from IIT Roorkee, Roy, 53, is ED human resources at IOC overseeing 34,000 employees. At Oil India he will oversee 8000 employees.

Roy was “pleasantly surprised” to be selected. “Usually, an internal candidate is chosen,” he said.

At IOC, which he joined in 1983, Roy was mainly in the marketing division and was IOC country head in Dubai for two years. Roy succeeds Nripen Bharali who retires on January 31, 2015.
