Launching more CGD rounds is a 'joke'

Vol 18, PW 2 (11 Sep 14) News in Brief

A major gas retailer has described as a ‘joke’ the PNGRB’s announcement of the upcoming 5th and 6th city gas rounds.

“They haven’t finalised the award of areas offered in rounds 3 and 4,” he says. “Yet they’re planning more rounds?” Operators complain the PNGRB is misleading when it says the 41 cities on offer have gas connectivity.

“Certain areas like Nainital in Uttarakhand and Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh are nowhere near a gas pipeline,” he says. “How can a CGD company bid unless it can source gas?” Cities on offer are located in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab with an average population of around 0.5m.

Amethi in Uttar Pradesh is the smallest city on offer with a population of 13,500 and the largest is Bhiwani in Haryana which has 1.6m people. A further 30 areas have been identified for future rounds.

A PNGRB source declined to comment.
