Tehelka, an investigative news magazine, once listed PK Mishra among the '10 People Who Got Away' following bloody communal riots in Gujarat in 2002.

But that was far from the minds of star-struck IAS officers who flocked to a dinner held in Mishra's honour on August 3 at the Ellisbridge Gymkhana in Ahmedabad, hosted by Gujarat chief secretary and GSPC chairman Varesh Sinha. They were there to celebrate Mishra's appointment on June 9 as Narendra Modi’s additional principal secretary in the all-powerful Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

"Mishra was Modi’s eyes and ears in Gujarat,” says a Gandhinagar source. “He’ll be the same in Delhi.

” Mishra or ‘PK’ as he is known among friends is the second appointment at the PMO after Nripendra Misra was appointed principal secretary on May 28. “PK is already more powerful than (cabinet secretary) Ajit Seth and Misra,” adds a Delhi source.

Modi has put Mishra in charge of the powerful Appointments Committee of the Cabinet that rubber-stamps board level public sector appointments. Among the files on his desk today is that of BC Tripathi, anxiously waiting for confirmation of his extension as GAIL chairman.

“PK attends all cabinet meetings and convenes all the secretaries meetings,” we learn. “This is the job of the cabinet secretary but Mishra has taken over that job.
