Worker crushed to death at ONGC yard

ONGC and its contractor Sitaram Energy and Logistics are blaming each other after a 22-year-old worker, known only as Amit, was crushed by a pipe at an ONGC yard at its Ankleshwar asset in Gujarat.

ONGC’s safety head for the facility PK Bandyopadhyay says the man was employed on a temporary basis by Sitaram to unload pipes on the afternoon of May 7 when a pipe broke loose and hit him at the storage yard in Panoli village. "It was the fault of the crane operator (Sitaram)," he says.

Bandyopadhyay adds contractors working for ONGC usually hire unemployed men standing outside the Panoli yard gate searching for daily work. But Sitaram Energy marketing manager Dinesh Vaghela insists Amit was an ONGC employee.

Bandyopadhyay says protocol was followed and all concerned authorities, including safety body OISD, were informed. A three-member ONGC team is investigating the accident and will submit a report by end-May.
