Shale gas pilot tenders from ONGC

Vol 16, PW 26 (25 Jul 13) News in Brief

ONGC will soon line up a rig and allied services for its shale gas pilot exploration programme in the Cambay basin where US-headquartered ConocoPhillips is its scientific and technical partner.

ONGC will issue tenders by September to hire a 2000-hp land rig to drill four pilot vertical wells to depths of 3000 to 4000 metres. “We're waiting for oil ministry permission to begin pilot drilling,” says a senior ONGC source.

“But we'll begin issuing tenders because we are determined to drill the wells this year.” ONGC also needs consumables like drill pipes, casing, tubulars, wellheads and cementing, logging, coring, perforation and ‘frakking’ services.

ONGC might take 45 to 60 days to drill each well. ConocoPhillips signed a MoU with ONGC in March 2012 to jointly explore and develop shale assets.

“We have a contact person in Conoco’s US office who gives us guidance,” says ONGC, “but no one from Conoco for this project is in India.”
