Maths whiz-kid is new GSPC chairman

Gujarat's new chief secretary and GSPC chairman Varesh Sinha, 59, will have his number crunching skills tested as GSPC prepares for first gas from its Deen Dayal West field.

Sinha, who joined the IAS in 1977, has bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics besides a MBA and doctorate in statistics. “Sinha is a bureaucrat to the core,” says a GSPC source.

“He is soft-spoken, keeps a low profile and goes by the rulebook.” Balding, clean shaven and bespectacled Sinha from Uttar Pradesh, took charge as Gujarat chief secretary on February 1 then took over as GSPC chairman on March 1.

He was previously Gujarat's additional chief secretary finance. Sinha is also chairman of Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals (GACL) and Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilisers (GNFC).

Born on April 6, 1954, Sinha retires on April 30, 2014. He avoids working late, keeps Mondays to Thursdays for meetings, and clears pending files on Fridays and Saturdays.
