Gangavaram public hearing next month

Vol 16, PW 10 (29 Nov 12) News in Brief

Cyclone Nilam, which hit the Andhra Pradesh coast on November 1, left death and destruction in its wake, flooding paddy fields, uprooting trees, and washing away villages.

It has also forced Petronet-LNG to postpone the public hearing for its proposed 5m t/y LNG terminal at Gangavaram from November 9 to either December 20 or 21. Petronet-LNG will hold the hearing at the site of the proposed terminal on the Andhra coast.

“Since the November 9 hearing could not take place,” says Petronet-LNG, “we’ve given the required one-month notice for the next hearing.” Petronet-LNG, he adds, has sent a draft Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study prepared by Hyderabad-based Vimta Labs to the environment ministry.

This draft EIA will be finalised after the public hearing and sent to the environment ministry so construction contractors can be pre-qualified in January or February 2013. Petronet-LNG wants Gangavaram to be constructed and commissioned by 2017.
