Aggressive EIL wins another LNG mandate

Vol 16, PW 2 (09 Aug 12) News in Brief

State-owned Engineers India (EIL) is surprising industry watchers by repeatedly winning LNG consultancy tenders.

Petronet-LNG awarded the Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) contract for its proposed 5m t/y LNG terminal at Gangavaram Port in Andhra Pradesh to EIL on July 31. Established names like Whessoe, Tractebel and Foster Wheeler fell by the wayside.

“Most LNG industry consultants showed interest but we received only four bids,” says a Petronet-LNG source. Tractebel, he adds, has completed the DFR assignment for Gangavaram, for which it was hired in January.

EIL must complete the FEED study within 16 weeks of the date of award. “EIL has become very aggressive in the LNG consultancy business,” adds a defeated competitor.

In May, EIL vanquished Foster Wheeler, Whessoe, Fluor Daniel, Tractebel and Sofregaz to win the FEED job for Petronet-LNG’s expansion of the Dahej LNG terminal in Gujarat from 10m t/y to 15m t/y
