BG challenge for Shaleen Sharma

Vol 15, PW 24 (14 Jun 12) News in Brief

Gujarat Gas managing director Shaleen Sharma doesn’t move to BG India as president until July 1.

But when he does 54-year-old Sharma’s first task will be to dispel fever pitch speculation that BG wants to leave India. Whispers first began circulating last November when BG announced plans to sell its 65.12% stake in gas retailer Gujarat Gas.

Cynics point to BG’s neglect of deepwater NELP block KG-DWN-2009/1 where partners ONGC and Andhra Pradesh Gas Infrastructure Corporation have been pleading with operator BG to call a Management Committee meeting. “BG is not interested,” says a source.

“It is finding excuses to avoid work on this block.” Sharma must also convince ministry mandarins to extend the PMT fields PSC beyond December 2019 in exchange for a promised $2.1bn water injection proposal.

Friends and colleagues are confident he can pull it off. “Shaleen has excellent people skills,” says an admirer.

“He is a peacemaker, not at all confrontational.”
