India to host oil importer-exporter meeting this year

Vol 9, PW 2 (04 May 05) News in Brief

India will host the first-ever Asian oil exporters and importers meeting later this year.

Additional secretary Talmiz Ahmad wrote to Russian industry and energy minister Viktor Khristenko last week thanking him for his planned participation in the meeting. The dates for the meet are not yet finalised, writes Ahmad.

However, we are looking at two options: second half of October or first half of November. Ahmad told Khristenko that the venue of the October meeting would be the hill station of Shimla in Himachal Pradesh while New Delhi will play host if the meeting is held in November.

India has invited oil-exporting countries like Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan to attend the conference. Major Asian energy importers China, Japan and South Korea are also invited.

An oil ministry source said only the Russian minister has confirmed attendance so far.
